Stand Downs were designed in an effort to provide services for homeless veterans.
Services such as food, clothing, health screenings, social services, housing, and
counseling are a variety of offerings from volunteers in the community. Stand Downs
are collaborative events, coordinated between local VAs, and other government and
community agencies, who serve the homeless.
The team of nurses, PT’s, PA’s etc interested will be prepared to serve 25 - 50 VETS
each day. Previous graduates are welcome to participate and give back to those who
have served. The needs are foot and nail care, education, shoes, socks, referral to an
on-site DPM, and morale support - some laying on of hands for healing, hope, and
humor. It is phenomenal learning and emotional opportunity.
designed in collaboration with Penasquitos Lutheran Church in San Diego, CA as a Medical Mission Trip to San Pedro Sula, Honduras in an effort to facilitate nurses working together and learning foot and nail care in a Faith-Based approach. This course is intended to recruit 5 USA nurses and 5 Honduran nurses to accompany a medical team to Honduras to assess and treat children in a local hospital and river shanty village and also learn about the Honduran culture, health care delivery, economics, educational system, and opportunities to enhance life in the 2nd poorest country in the world. We may be doing foot care on children/young adults for our Hands on Feet Opportunity as only 3% of the population is over the age of 65 years of age. 15 CE’s – 3.0 day course. Spanish speaking not necessary but definitely preferred.
designed to be offered every spring for nurses interested in the health, hope, and humor of conducting foot care. It is designed as a time to meet all of the needs that are requested through out the year and focus on a balance of work, pleasure, innovation, and networking. There is opportunity to learn about issues such as: designing a foot and nail care practice, and focusing on the multidisciplinary team approach to fitting for compression socks, shoes, orthotics, and other foot and nail care concerns such as accommodating severe deformities, promoting comfort and referring to other disciplines. Anybody who is either board certified in foot and nail care or board certified eligible is encouraged to attend. For 2010 – 20 CE’s – 15 hours didactic with field trips to specialty areas, 5 hours hands on feet at the Veterans Village of San Diego – 4.5 days Thursday – Sunday.
